Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities 2016 Questionnaire A - Japan: Travel and Excursion

The Travel and Excursion measure includes 2 items from the 2016 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities - Japan, to assess how one spends time outside of work and school, particularly in terms of household duties, educational pursuits, and leisure activities. In particular, respondents are asked how many days they spent in the past year on a trip – both short day trips and longer domestic and or international trips –and whom they traveled with for each kind of excursion. Navigational aspects (i.e. next question sequences) have not been included on this page but can be viewed on the original questionnaire located here.

Instructions: Activities completed in question 19 and question 20 should be indicated again if they occurred during travel or excursion.

1. What kinds of travel and excursions did you do this year, and how many times? Write the number of times for each question. If you did not travel or go on an excursion, indicate “0”. If the number is ten times and over please write “10”.

  • Day excursion (a day trip lasting more than half a day and including departure at night without overnight stay)
  • Travel involving at least one overnight stay: Within Japan: Sightseeing (including travel for recreation or sport, etc.)
  • Travel involving at least one overnight stay: Within Japan: Return to the home town, visiting someone
  • Travel involving at least one overnight stay: Outside Japan: Sightseeing (including travel for recreation or sport, etc.)
